Welcome to Bird Rescue
NZ Bird Rescue Charitable Trust accepts and cares for all native and non-native birds.
We work with over 6000 birds each year including orphaned chicks, and victims of cat attacks, road accidents, pollution (e.g. botulism), human cruelty or bad weather.
Please just bring your bird in, no need to call first. Our small team may not always be available to take your call.
We do not accept bird admissions after hours as there is no vet onsite. You can either take your bird to the nearest emergency vet; or keep it warm overnight and bring it to us the following morning.
We are unable to accept roosters and chickens. Please contact The Animal Sanctuary for advice:
www.animalsanctuary.co.nz
We do not accept lost or abandoned pet birds (e.g. budgies, lorikeets, cockatiels etc) to prevent risk of disease transmission to our wild birds.
Our Centre is located at
74 Avonleigh Road,
Green Bay, Waitakere, Auckland.

NZ Bird Rescue accepts and cares for all NZ birds. Our aim is to rehabilitate and release birds as soon as they are ready.
All birds are carefully assessed on arrival and a plan made to achieve the best outcome for the bird, including a visit to our vet if needed.
Most birds are treated and cared for on site at our Green Bay centre. Once a bird is deemed ready, it is released – either in a supported environment where food is still provided or back into the wild, ideally close to where it was found. We also have a number of approved foster carers who will take young non-native birds such as sparrow, thrush and blackbirds and look after them on our behalf. This helps us manage the enormous number of birds over the busy summer season. Native birds can only be cared for by organisations like us that have a DOC permit.
We are always looking for people to assist with fostering, as well as for suitable release environments for geese, turkey, ducks and other farm and game birds, so please let us know if you can help.
Sadly, in some cases where a bird is severely injured, in extreme pain or will never be able to survive in the wild, our clinical staff will assess them and may make the tough decision to euthanize the bird. Unfortunately this often applies to very young birds, where research shows that birds subject to extreme cold or extreme hunger at a young age have a very low survival rate. However we take each bird on a case by case basis and give every bird the best and most humane treatment possible.
We occasionally receive found pet birds. We look after pet birds for at least 7 days in line with SPCA policy. The bird is advertised on Trade Me Lost and Found Pets page during this time. If it is not claimed, it will then be available for re-homing.
We’re unable to collect birds and do not offer a permanent home for healthy birds or unwanted pets. And as we’re located in a residential area, we are not permitted to keep roosters on site.
Thank you for caring for our birds.
